It is no longer news that the textile industry contributes a lot to the overall environmental pollution. There are different statistics that various research organizations show. These figures explain the different ways in which the textile industry causes damage and its impact on statistics. Textiles cause more than 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions. It uses more than 20% of global industrial water and are the largest source of plastic microfibers in the oceans. Moreover, they are one of the largest contributors to waste in landfills. It is a crucial problem, and the recycled colored yarn is definitely a solution.
When we talk about the textile contribution to environmental pollution, know that the solutions are also plenty. Textile manufacturers in India form a huge community. So, their positive impact will also bring a significant change. Globally more than 111 million tons of textiles are made each year, with more than 80 million tons made from polyester and nylon, a major source of continuous synthetic microfiber pollution. The CO2 emissions caused by the manufacturing of 80 million tons of polyester & nylon are estimated to be 500 million tons of CO2 annually. It is equivalent to ½ of the global carbon dioxide emission from aviation or 1.4% of global CO2 emissions.
Matter of Concern
According to the Lensing Group, the world’s textile consumption was 95.6 million tonnes in 2015. Due to the numbers that the fashion industry generates, the impact on the environment can be truly deep and damaging.
On average, the textile industry uses more than 8,000 chemicals to make the 400 billion m2 of fabric sold annually around the world. Many are toxic and persist in the environment.
About 34% of energy is consumed in spinning, 23% in weaving, 38% in chemical processing, and another 5% for miscellaneous purposes. Not only is gigantic volumes of energy consumed, it is also an extremely expensive process.
What do you need to do?
If you are into the textile business, change the way you produce your yarn to contribute in saving the environment. Opt for a circularity program wherein you use clothing waste to manufacture recycled colored yarn. Moreover, you can use the pet bottle waste in your manufacturing process to reduce the landfill pressure that they cause. If every textile manufacturer in India or anywhere across the globe uses this tactic, they can reduce several tons of carbon emissions.
On the other hand, your purchase preferences will make the difference if you are a buyer. Always look for sustainable clothing options. Through this, you actually support sustainable fashion and the manufacturers that promote sustainable yarn production. Understand that even the smallest of contributions can make a huge difference, so do your bit and keep supporting the environment.
