Some types of yarn lines can be crocheted or knitted. However, weaving yarns and knitted yarns are not the same. Both yarns have different characteristics. We design and spin weaving yarn with durability, strength and non-elasticity in mind. We achieve this by increasing ply and/or a tighter twist. Ply is the number of individual twisted strands. We know that our customers desire strength as a priority, especially when it is used as a warp. So, Oasis Textiles produces yarn capable of withstanding the tension imparted on a loom.
If the weaving yarn is used for making items that are suppressed during use such as towels and rugs, it has to be durable. High elasticity makes it difficult to weave and warp. On the other hand, you can find knitted yarn in a range of materials, textures, styles, weights and colours. Knitted yarns are designed with fashion in mind. Weaving yarn can be focused towards standard colour palettes that can vary from year to year. We offer a range of knitting yarns as well.
Depending on the material and composition, yarn can have different varieties. Weaving yarn is often categorized into three categories. Some yarns are derived from plants. These plants have parts that produce the fibre for making yarn. These parts include bast and seeds. Cotton is a perfect example of this category. Bast fibres are obtained from stalked leaves, broad leaves and weblike vein structures. The second category is the protein category. Yarn of this category is derived from animal sources. Hair of sheep, rabbit, goat, yak and camel are processed into weaving yarn. The third category includes yarn obtained from fibre that is chemically processed. The raw materials are altered in the synthetic category. Cellulose pulp is chemically processed to obtain rayon. Similarly, cellulosic is processed in a different fashion to obtain Tencel.
Weaving yarn weight does not describe the weight of yarn. It describes the construction of the weaving yarn. The weight of weaving yarn is typically 8/4, 5/2, 3/2. The first number represents the size of each fibre strand. The second number represents the number of individual plies or strands in the weaving yarn. Thicker ply strands have a lower first number. Weaving yarns are also described as yards per cone or yards per pound value. The thinner yarn has more yards per pound. These values are not the same for all material of construction. Yards/pound values are different for 20/2 yarn made from wool, silk and cotton.
